Top 11 Quick Ways To Speed Up Your Computer!

Updated: Sep 12, 2018

Is your computer getting slower and annoying to use by time? Well, in today’s post we’ll be telling 10 ways by which you can easily speed up performance in your computer.

1. Upgrade with an SSD

We’ve told this solution before and we’re telling it again. If your PC is using an old HDD, then the best way to upgrade is by installing an SSD. We did a detailed article on this before as well. By upgrading your PC with an SSD you will see a day and night difference, programs in general will load faster, your PC will boot up much faster compared to before. Due to its effectiveness this is our favorite way of speeding up your PC.

2. Disable Start-up apps

If you’re computer seems to boot up really slow then we’d recommend disabling some startup apps on your system. It’s a very simple process for Windows 10 users. Simply go to your task manager by right clicking on your task-bar.

Then click task manager

Then go to the startup tab

Then have a look at the apps that will open on start-up. We recommend disabling any apps that aren’t helpful, like uTorrent, steam client, etc. You can simply disable an app by right clicking on the app and clicking disable.

We don’t recommend disabling your anti-virus or something that is important for running your PC.

3. Get rid of bloatware

These days many laptops come with a ton of bloatware that occupies your precious disk space and at the same time slows down your computer. In case you didn’t know bloatware is useless and annoying software pre-installed by the manufacturer of your laptop. (They do this as they earn money for this)

We highly recommend deleting software like MacAfee and Norton even though they are anti-viruses and help keep your system safe. If you don’t uninstall these kinds of programs or disable them they keep on using your system’s resources and annoy you buy pop ups. We’d rather prefer a paid anti-virus like Kaspersky or Bitdefender, or a free one like Avast and AVG.

To delete or remove bloatware from your system, simply head to the settings by pressing on the windows button in your taskbar. Click the settings icon. Then head to apps, and then from there you shall see all the apps on your PC. You can just go ahead and click on the app and then click uninstall. Be very careful while removing these apps, some apps play a big role in running your PC. Deleting an app that’s important will end up ruining your PC’s settings. So, we recommend deleting the annoying apps like MacAfee. However, if you do delete an anti-virus make sure to install an another one as it plays an important role in protecting your PC from threats.

4. Don’t download Stuff

Well, we aren’t saying that to keep your PC running fast you should stop downloading. But you should be extremely mindful when downloading anything from the internet. Don’t download things that are too good to be true. Don’t download pirated software as there is a good chance that your computer can get affected by that. Lastly, don’t download third party driver installers.

The first 2 recommendations are straight forward. Why do we not recommend downloading third-part driver installers? Well because it isn’t safe. Drivers is software that helps your hardware like keyboard and mouse communicate with the Operating System of your computer. So, there is a driver for everything from your Keyboard to your network card. The reason we don’t recommend is because even though they might do the job fine, it’s not worth the risk. Windows is already very good ad keeping its drivers up to date and making sure they run properly, and in case you can’t download the latest drivers for some reason you can contact Microsoft for help or the manufacturer of that thing.

5. Upgrade Your Ram

If your computer doesn’t have sufficient RAM, you’ll notice it will be difficult for you to multi-task between apps. Most of the time it’s because your system has less RAM. You should be fine if you have 8 GB RAM in your system, however you will feel some lag if your PC has less than 4 GB Ram. The easy and simple solution to this is just download some RAM off the internet.

.

.

Just kidding, never do that!! --- RAM is a part of your PC’s hardware and so it is a physical thing and can never be downloaded digitally. Instead what’s downloaded is probably some adware or a Trojan.

6. Don’t rely on Windows Defender

Yes, Windows defender is an anti-virus but it’s not as good as other anti-viruses, even free anti-viruses seem to do a better job than Windows Defender. So, we recommend not to download MacAfee or Norton. Yes, don’t download these. If you’re looking for a paid anti-virus we would recommend going for either Bitdefender or for Kaspersky. These are the best Anti-virus programs in the market. However, if you want to stay cheap then our choices for free anti-viruses are AVG or Avast. These anti-viruses don’t have annoying pop-up ads although they do tempt you to download a paid version by telling you have something wrong with your file registry. But most of the time it’s nothing to worry about.

7. Make sure things are cool.

As you use your PC, it gets hot. That’s completely fine. But make sure it doesn’t get too hot. If your system gets too hot your CPU will throttle. Throttling means when your CPU reduces performance to keep itself cool. This usually happens when your CPU reaches the Thermal Junction, which like the maximum temperature, after which your CPU starts to throttle and reduce performance. In case of laptops, Windows purposely underclocks your CPU when you’re on battery, to increase battery life. To solve that we recommend getting your PC cleaned by an expert (if you aren’t confident on opening your system up), every 2 to 3 years.

In the case of laptops, we recommend you get its thermal paste changed by an expert. Thermal paste is (surprise, surprise) a paste that is applied between your CPU and the heatsink to transfer heat efficiently. Usually laptop manufacturers apply thermal pastes of either poor quality or poorly. So, because of that your CPU temperatures rise which well makes it hotter and makes it throttle. So, we recommend getting your thermal paste replaced by an expert as it’s not the easiest job to do. I have opened an old laptop twice (once to re-apply thermal paste and second to clean it up). It wasn’t very easy, but I still manage to do it. You can watch on how I did it below on our YouTube Channel.

Another thing you can do to improve performance of your laptop is to plug it in when you need more performance. (plugging it in for an extended time may cause damage to batteries). If you’re on battery power and you still require more power, you can easily put your laptop to high performance mode! You can do this in Windows 10 by going to your task-bar clicking the battery icon and then putting it to high performance. Though your CPU will be clocked higher you still won’t get full performance unless you plug it in and putting your laptop in high performance mode can seriously effect battery life.

Another thing we would like to mention is that, don’t invest in laptop coolers. Yes, they do cool things down a little bit, but they aren’t as effective as cleaning or re-applying the thermal paste.

8. Get rid of unwanted programs

There are many programs that you need sometimes but no always. However, many programs seem to run in the background eating up your computer’s resources. You can mostly see them in your system tray. A good way to free up some RAM and get some extra speed is to close those background programs.

9. Optimize Your Browser

You probably use your web browser a lot. Web browsers can end up sucking up a lot of CPU resources and RAM. A good way to prevent that is to reduce as many extensions as possible, this will help free up some RAM and your CPU resources.

10. Use less animations

Windows uses many animations that make up a better experience, however you can disable them to make Windows feel much faster. To remove the animations all you must do is go to the settings and search “performance” then click on the first result. To remove all the fancy stuff, select “adjust best for performance” or if you want to remove some selected animations you can do that by selecting custom.

11. Reset or Re-install Windows

Lastly if all fails then the best and perhaps the last option is to re-install windows. And that’s easy but time taking to do. You can reset your PC with the “Reset Windows” feature and get a fresh start on Windows.
