Learn the Right and Simple Way to Speed Up Your Computer!

Updated: Sep 1, 2018

We all need fast computers for different reasons, but what's the best way to actually speed things up on your computer regardless of what Operating System you run. Well, i the best way to speed up your old slow computer is to upgrade from an HDD to an SSD and not try to download RAM off the internet!

What's an SSD and an HDD

An SSD and HDD are two different kinds of storage devices that your computer uses to store and access data from, so all your pictures and files are stored in these. HDD: An HDD stands for Hard Disk Drive. It has 2 main components, heads and platters. To put it simply, platters are a bunch of metal plates that store all your data in different parts of the plate. The Platters move at really fast speeds to access data you want. The head is responsible for reading and writing the data. So whenever you save a picture, it's saved in the platter of the disk by the head. And when you open that picture the platters spin to find where that picture is stored and then the head reads it.

Though the Platters move at extremely high speeds, a hard disk is still slow at doing things. Hard disks are cheaper compared to and SSD. They are mainly more useful if you plan on storing large amounts of data. An HDD come in different configurations like 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM. The RPM of the HDD tells how fast the platters rotate per minute, the more the RPM the faster the HDD, however the fastest HDD you can get is 7200 RPM which still is much slower then a typical SSDSSD: An SSD stands for Solid-State-Drive. While an HDD has moving parts like the platters, an SSD has no mechanical parts. In the case of an SSD you have NAND chips on which data is stored, and a NAND controller.

So How Does Upgrading to an SSD help?

Upgrading to an SSD helps you by increasing read and write speeds. Think about it this way, when you want to access a picture in your computer an HDD has to spin around a several hundred times to find it and read it, however in an SSD its quickly read by the Chip. Not having any moving parts helps make an SSD much faster and in some case more durable as a simple shock won't hurt them. However installing an SSD is costly compared to an HDD. Hard Disks are usually better for storage purposes as you don't usually need speed when you're backing up data compared to when you're opening a program off your disk. Recently SSDs have gotten much cheaper and less costly, so it's a good time to upgrade.

But Which SSD to Buy?

Choosing the best SSD to buy is not easy. There are many SSDs out there with many different specifications. Our recommendations are the Samsung 860 EVO and the Crucial MX500.

These SSDs are one of the best SSDs in the market, they each have a 5 year warranty and are one of the fastest in the market. The Samsung SSD is a tiny bit faster but you won't notice even a slight difference in day to day tasks. If you're building a new system or planning to re-install all your stuff, we recommend to go for the Crucial MX500, as it is cheaper then the Samsung 860 EVO and also has a good support. If you plan on transferring all your data from your old HDD to your new SSD then you'll have to clone your HDD using a software. Samsung has a better cloning software which is why we recommend to go for the Samsung 860 EVO even though its around $20 USD more expensive at the time of this article. If you didn't know, cloning means to basically copy all the data off your old HDD to your new SSD. So by cloning all your settings, programs and other things will remain, but your Computer will be much faster due to the SSD.
